Somnambulance Artist Brief:
The SOMNAMBULANCE project was created while under canvas in a
field in Somerset in summer 2022, watched over by the ashes of the peace activist
Wally Hope. SOMNAMBULANCE is a
combination of free-form electronics, pure ambient, sonic relaxation techniques
and bucolic situationism.

Somnambulance present their latest album, Wally’s Ashes; a
live recording documenting their first UK festival performance at KozFest in
Axminster, in July 2022. It is a
long-form electronic improvisation involving real-time synthesis and sampling, intended
to induce contemplative and meditative states in the listener. They draw from over 50 years of ambient
electronic music tradition. They use
synthesisers and samplers including the Soma Labs Lyra 8, Moog DFAM, Korg
Microfreak, Elektron Octatrack, SP404, Vongon Paragraphs, Korg Volca and creative
processing by Chase-Bliss, Strymon and Old Blood Noise Endeavours.
Somnambulance prefer to engage in site-specific work where they are
inspired by or interact with their immediate environment using a combination of
techniques including live synthesis, field recording, objet trouvé and
sonic ritual. They profess an interest
in producing positive, joyful states in their listeners of “relaxation,
elevation; transformation”, in a similar way to the “sound bath” therapy
concept.
Wally’s Ashes was created by the same group of musicians responsible
for Rubber Bus’ acclaimed 2020 lockdown album Return To Reason which
Byron Coley described as a “…mix of early 60s electronic music, post-form
stonerism and a smidgeon of Gong…” in The Wire magazine. Somnambulance features members of The Mandala
Synthesiser Orchestra, Rubber Bus, Here & Now, Imitation Electric Piano,
The Divine Soma Experience and Thought Bubble.
Wally’s Ashes is available as a digital download
or as a limited cd (100 units first run) in a full colour card sleeve in poly
wallet.

Brian Eno, Kluster, early Tangerine Dream, K. Leimer, Helene Vogelsinger, Suzanne
Ciani, the Berlin School and perhaps, Coil’s more laid-back moments. Somnambulance are Andy Roid from Here &
Now and Planet Gong, Mark le Sueur aka King Razor, George Baylis from Divine
Soma Experience, Paul Khimasia Morgan of Imitation Electric Piano and Nick
Raybould of Thought Bubble. They were
joined on percussion by Hawkwind drummer Richard Chadwick during their
performance at KozFest 2023.
